He's beyond witty, never talks down to the kids (in fact, the humor comes from him talking to them as adults and their childlike reactions). The author knows kids. Maisie and Grant are so realistic, I felt like I was reading about my own grands. There are rich, deep, moving passages (like when Patrick tries to tell his self-centered, self-pitying, but nuanced sister how gay people deal with assimilation). There are so many really funny scenes with the kids as Patrick creates his own version of a dad. And he's so good. What a hero. This book is great. Highly recommended. If you're a fan of the sitcom Will & Grace and like to binge-watch (reading) that show, this may be for you. While I like the TV show, I prefer it in small doses as otherwise it becomes bit repetitive with its smart repartee. The set-up of this book reminded me of a "stock" NBC sitcom with a fairly stereotypical gay man (from Palm Springs nonetheless), cute but wise children, a "broken" but ultimately "good" brother, an overbearing and straight-laced suburban sister, etc. When I read a book, I generally expect more from the words on pages than when watching TV. ... as they say, "You'll laugh, ... you'll cry". It seems all a bit too calculated in order to achieve commercial success by aiming "for the middle"; rather than something that stands out due to new perspectives one might otherwise not have encountered. If this book had been published in 1991 I might have felt different, but it's 2021.
